I had a similar problem -- I needed an opening and closing balance for any given time frame(for accounts): I also have a calendar hierarchy year/qtr/month/day, so created a calculated member called "Opening Balance" with the following:
Aggregate
(
PERIODSTODATE
([Date].[Calendar DayMonthQtrYr].[(All)],
[Date].[Calendar DayMonthQtrYr].prevmember
),
[Measures].[Net Amount]
)
** note: you must have the () around the All or it won't work!
for the closing balance, just use "currentmember" in place of "prevmember".
