Microsoft PerformancePoint Server 2007 (PPS) is on the verge of release, marking a historic shift in the Business Intelligence (BI) market.  Why am I excited about this opportunity?
Again this year, market analysts have posted survey results that indicate BI is the top spending priority for most CIOs.  Acquisitions and mergers in the BI industry are occurring left and right, and many analysts anticipate more to come.  Revenue growth for BI has risen sharply.  BI is a big topic that often includes a lot of different technologies, a lot of user tools and requirements, and some analysts have noted the typical organization owns on average 6 different BI systems – and still, more than 70% of information workers do not use BI systems.
Microsoft understands that BI is about the user (“People Ready’ business), not merely the technology.  On any given day, a user does email (Communications & Collaboration), accesses and shares documents (Content Management), looks for files (Search), reviews and submits items for approval (Workflow & Portal), and reviews data through various reports (Business Intelligence).
The Microsoft Office System is designed to support all of these every day functions.
What makes PPS different than other BI applications?
PPS extends the capabilities of the Microsoft Office System to bridge the gap between users and the data they need to make better, informed decisions.
PPS enhances SharePoint for BI Dashboard development and delivery – where data can be monitored.
PPS enables robust and intuitive drill down and slice & dice capabilities –  where data can be analyzed.
PPS leverages Excel as a familiar user interface but centralizes and secures models, calculations and report templates while providing workflow capabilities  – where budgets & forecasts can be planned.
PPS integrates handily with the SQL Server database and BI platform – where the data resides.
And the licensing costs for PPS are widely recognized as significantly lower than any comparable solution on the market.
If your users utilize Office every day, and if your IT staff has implemented SQL Server and/or SharePoint, why wouldn’t you implement PPS?  This is a great opportunity to further build upon your existing infrastructure and technology investments.
